Carcassonne: where medieval magic meets modern luxury

Carcassonne at Sunset

Carcassonne may be my favourite region to visit in France. Upon arriving I was completely blown away. I am fascinated by castles and medieval history, but visiting medieval castles today they unfortunately often lack a sense of vibrancy and vitality.

When entering through the medieval city walls, you are immediately greeted by bustling shops, cafés and restaurants. There are various decorations and designs playing on the medieval theme of the city.

As well as small ice cream parlours and dessert shops, there are also many restaurants including a Michelin star restaurant called La Barbacane. This restaurant is inside a beautiful hotel named Hotel de la Cite. The hotel and restaurant have the most incredible views of both Carcassonne and the surrounding region.

Quite honestly, being in Carcassonne felt like living the life of a modern-day Disney medieval princess. The sense of awe and magic around Carcassonne is truly spectacular and I have personally not experienced anything like it elsewhere.

I visited Carcassonne on a tour of the South of France, however you could easily spend your entire trip there particularly if you enjoy exploring and learning about history. A popular wedding destination, it could also easily be a perfect destination as part of a honeymoon. The variety of activities also make it a very special option for a family holiday.

Personally, I think Carcassonne is truly a hidden gem in the south of France and I am very much looking forward to the day I get to go back. The photographs do not capture the magical experience, which is quite remarkable considering how beautiful they are.
